Savanne District – Southern coast and the sacred lake of Grand Bassin
Savanne, or Savannah, lies in the south of Mauritius, where cliffs, rivers and green hills meet the Indian Ocean. The district is home to Grand Bassin, or Ganga Talao, a crater lake regarded as sacred by Mauritian Hindus and the destination of a large pilgrimage during the festival of Maha Shivaratri, when thousands walk there from across the island. For centuries the fertile land also supported sugar estates and fishing villages along the rugged coast.
Today the district covers 244.8 km² and has around 68,500 inhabitants, known for its wild coastline and quiet villages. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Savanne? Share them with our community!
