Flacq District – Fertile lands farmed since Dutch times

Flacq, in the east of Mauritius, has a history reaching back to the Dutch period (1598–1710), when settlers valued its rich soil for farming and gardening. During the Dutch occupation the area was divided into eight townships, and in 1886 the island was divided into nine administrative regions whose borders survive today as the Districts of Mauritius.

Over the following centuries Flacq became known for its sugar-cane fields, lively markets and beaches along the eastern coast. It is now the country's largest district by area, covering 297.9 km², with around 138,000 inhabitants. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Flacq?
