Moka District – The central plateau and the Creole mansion of Eureka
Moka District lies on the central plateau of Mauritius, among mountains, valleys and waterfalls. In the colonial era its cooler climate and fertile land attracted plantation owners, and the district is home to Eureka, a nineteenth-century Creole mansion that offers a glimpse into life on the island's estates, as well as Le Réduit, the historic residence of the island's governors and later heads of state.
Today Moka covers 230.5 km² and has around 84,000 inhabitants, combining green landscapes, villages and modern development such as education and business centres. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Moka? Share them with our community!
