Beau Bassin-Rose Hill – The "twin towns" of the central plateau

Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, known in French as the "Villes sœurs" or sister towns, grew from two neighbouring settlements on the central plateau of Mauritius. Like the rest of Plaines Wilhems, the area developed quickly in the late nineteenth century, when the railway made it easy for families to move from the hot coast to the cooler highlands, and the two towns eventually merged into one municipality.

Today Beau Bassin-Rose Hill has around 147,000 inhabitants, making it one of the largest towns on the island, known for its gardens, cultural life and historic buildings. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Beau Bassin or Rose Hill? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
