Quatre Bornes – The "City of Flowers", proclaimed a town in 1896
In 1740 French maps showed the area of today's Quatre Bornes as forest slowly being cleared for settlement. The arrival of the railway in 1864 under British rule brought rapid growth to Plaines Wilhems, as people moved in from the coastal regions. Quatre Bornes was proclaimed a village in 1890 and a town in 1896, later absorbing neighbouring areas such as Bassin and Palma in 1967 and La Source in 1987.
In the 1980s and 1990s the town saw rapid commercial growth. Known as La Ville des Fleurs, it is today home to about 71,000 people and famous for its lively market. Do you have stories or photos from Quatre Bornes? Share them with our community!
