Vacoas-Phoenix – The "twin cities" of the Mauritian highlands

Vacoas-Phoenix, known in French as the "Villes Jumelles" or twin cities, grew from two neighbouring settlements on the cool central plateau of Mauritius, between Quatre Bornes and Curepipe. Their development accelerated in the late nineteenth century, when the railway and the healthier highland climate drew families up from the coast. Nearby, the Mare aux Vacoas reservoir has long been an important water source for the island.

Today the town is administered by its own municipal council and extends partly into Moka District. It is a residential and commercial centre where many cultures and traditions meet. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Vacoas or Phoenix? Share them with our community!
