Curepipe – The "City of Light" on the central plateau

Curepipe, known as La Ville-Lumière, lies high on the central plateau of Mauritius and is famous for its colonial architecture. The town grew especially in the second half of the nineteenth century, when many residents left the hot and unhealthy coast for the cooler, fresher highlands. Its landmarks include the Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct volcanic crater offering sweeping views over the island, as well as historic public buildings and gardens.

Today Curepipe has around 78,600 inhabitants and extends partly into Moka District. Its cool, rainy climate and old buildings give it a special character. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Curepipe? Share them with our community!
