Gnaviyani Atoll – Fuvahmulah, the one-island atoll of the Equator
Gnaviyani Atoll corresponds to the natural atoll of Fuvahmulah, a single large island lying on the Equatorial Channel between Huvadhu and Addu atolls. Unlike most Maldivian islands, Fuvahmulah has freshwater lakes and marshlands, and its fertile soil has long supported farming, fruit trees and taro fields. Its isolated position gave the island its own dialect, customs and strong community identity over the centuries.
Today it is the smallest administrative unit of the Maldives by area, yet one of its most distinctive islands, known for its lush interior, pebble beaches and rich marine life. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Fuvahmulah? Share them with our community!
