Gaafu Alifu Atoll – Buddhist ruins of Devvadu in the Huvadhu lagoon

Gaafu Alifu forms the north-eastern part of Huvadhu Atoll, one of the largest atolls in the world. On the island of Devvadu, in the centre of the great lagoon, there are many remains from the Buddhist era, mainly low mounds left by ruined stupas, and some ancient kings of the Maldives traced their ancestry to families from this island. The atoll's ancient name, Suvadiva, reflects its long history.

The administrative district was created on 8 February 1962 when Huvadhu was divided in two, and its capital is Vilingili. Today its islands live from fishing and tourism. Do you have stories, legends or photos from Gaafu Alifu? Share them with our community!
