Kaafu Atoll – The atolls around Malé and its old Friday Mosque
Kaafu Atoll brings together the geographical atolls of North and South Malé, Gaafaru and Kaashidhoo, surrounding the capital Malé, which has been the centre of Maldivian political and religious life for centuries. In Malé stands the Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy), built in the seventeenth century from carved coral stone and a treasured example of the country's Islamic heritage, which began when the Maldives embraced Islam in the twelfth century.
Today Kaafu is the most connected region of the country, with the international airport, busy harbours and many resort islands, while local islands keep fishing traditions alive. Do you have stories or photos from Kaafu? Share them with our community!
