Alif Alif Atoll – Northern Ari, inhabited since ancient times

Alif Alif, or Northern Ari Atoll, combines the northern part of Ari Atoll, the small Rasdhukuramathi Atoll and the isolated island of Thoddoo. Many of its islands have been inhabited since ancient times, and archaeological remains from the Maldivian Buddhist period have been found here, recalling a chapter of history that predates the country's conversion to Islam.

The division was created on 1 March 1984, when Ari Atoll was separated into northern and southern sections. Today the atoll's islands are known for fishing, farming – Thoddoo is famous for its watermelons – and tourism. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Alif Alif?
