Baa Atoll – A UNESCO biosphere reserve among Maldivian atolls
Baa Atoll includes Southern Maalhosmadulu, Fasdhūtherē and Goifulhafehendhu atolls in the north-west of the Maldives. For centuries its islanders have lived from the sea, from fishing and coconut palms, and from traditional crafts such as weaving and lacquerwork that were handed down through generations. The atoll's rich coral reefs and lagoons have always been at the heart of daily life.
In 2011 Baa Atoll was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognising its exceptional marine life, especially at Hanifaru Bay, where large numbers of manta rays gather. Today it combines local island communities with sustainable tourism. Do you have stories or photos from Baa Atoll? Share them with our community!
