Lhaviyani Atoll – Faadhippolhu and the legendary Boduthiladhunmathi kingdom
Lhaviyani Atoll, also known as Faadhippolhu, is linked to the legend of the Kingdom of Boduthiladhunmathi, an ancient separate realm whose capital is said to have been located here. Such stories reflect how deep the roots of Maldivian island history reach. Of the atoll's 54 islands, only four are inhabited – Naifaru, Hinnavaru, Kurendhoo and Olhuvelifushi – with Naifaru serving as the capital.
In the 1980s the island of Maafilaafushi was resettled to relieve the lack of land in Malé. Today the atoll is known for its fishing communities, craft traditions and resort islands. Do you have stories, legends or photos from Lhaviyani? Share them with our community!
