Raa Atoll – Northern Maalhosmadulu, with more inhabited islands than any other

Raa Atoll, or Northern Maalhosmadulu, has the highest number of populated islands in the Maldives, reflecting a long history of settlement across its reefs and lagoons. The natural atoll stretches about 56 km from north to south, and islands such as Alifushi and Etthingili stand on a detached reef of their own, surrounded by deep water. For centuries its people have lived from fishing, seafaring and boatbuilding.

Today the atoll's capital is Ungoofaaru, and it also includes the island of Dhuvaafaru. Local island life, traditional crafts and tourism exist side by side. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Raa Atoll? Share them with our community!
