Shaviyani Atoll – Northern Miladhunmadulu and its island communities
Shaviyani Atoll corresponds to the northern section of the natural Miladhunmadulu Atoll in the north of the Maldives. For centuries its islands have been home to close-knit communities living from fishing, coconut palms and small-scale farming, with traditions, songs and crafts passed down through families. Like much of the northern Maldives, the atoll has a long history of seafaring and trade with neighbouring atolls.
Its islands include Funadhoo and Milandhoo, both of which have served as the seat of the atoll's administration. Today island life, fishing and new infrastructure shape everyday life here. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Shaviyani? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
