Laamu Atoll – Haddhunmathi, an atoll of ancient island heritage

Laamu Atoll, historically known as Haddhunmathi, corresponds to the natural atoll of the same name and is mostly rimmed by broad barrier reefs, many of them topped by islands along its eastern and southern edges. Its islands have been settled for many centuries, and places such as Isdhoo are known for an old mosque and remains from the era before the Maldives embraced Islam, showing how deep the atoll's history reaches.

The administrative capital is Fonadhoo. Today the atoll's communities live from fishing, farming and tourism, while keeping their island customs and close family ties. Do you have stories, legends or photos from Laamu Atoll? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
