Meemu Atoll – Site of the 1573 wreck of the Kalhuohfummi

Meemu Atoll, also known as Mulaku or Mulakatolhu, is linked to one of the most famous episodes in Maldivian history. Off the south-eastern reef of Kolhuvaariyaafushi lies the 1573 wreck of the Kalhuohfummi, the legendary vessel associated with the struggle that freed the Maldives from Portuguese rule in that same year. The island of Kolhufushi also has a mosque of historical value.

Unlike many other atolls, no Buddhist remains have been found here. Today Meemu's communities live from fishing, farming and tourism, preserving their island customs and close family ties. Do you have stories, legends or photos from Meemu Atoll? Share them with our community!
