Faafu Atoll – Northern Nilandhe and its resettled islands
Faafu Atoll, or Northern Nilandhe, corresponds to the natural atoll of the same name in the centre of the Maldives. Over the centuries, the pattern of settlement here has changed: some islands, such as Himithi, were once inhabited, but their people were later resettled on other islands so that the community would be large enough to hold Friday prayers together. This shows how faith and community have shaped life across the atolls.
Today Faafu is one of the smaller atolls by population, and its islanders live from fishing, farming and tourism, surrounded by coral reefs and lagoons. Do you have stories or photos from Faafu? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
