Vaavu Atoll – Felidhu and the lone island of Vattaru
Vaavu Atoll combines two natural atolls: Felidhu, shaped like a diamond with the long Fotteyo reef stretching eastward, and the small Vattaru Reef, which has only one island. Its communities have long depended on the sea, and the atoll's people are known as skilled fishermen and sailors who travelled by dhoni to Malé, about 64 km away – a trip of some three hours by traditional boat.
Today Vaavu is the smallest administrative atoll of the Maldives by population, but its reefs and channels are famous among divers. Island customs, music and crafts continue to be passed down through families. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Vaavu? Share them with our community!
