Noonu Atoll – Southern Miladhunmadulu and its island communities

Noonu Atoll corresponds to the southern part of Miladhunmadulu Atoll in the north of the Maldives. For centuries its islands have been home to close-knit communities who lived from fishing, coconut palms and small-scale farming, travelling between islands by traditional dhoni boats. Songs, crafts and stories passed down through generations still form an important part of island identity.

Today the atoll's capital is Manadhoo, and according to the 2022 census Noonu has about 12,500 inhabitants, around 2% of the national population. Local island life and tourism exist side by side.
