Rumphi District – Home of the Livingstonia mission and the Nyika Plateau
Rumphi District in northern Malawi is home to the Tumbuka people and their sub-group, the Phoka, whose language, Chitumbuka, is spoken throughout the district. In the late nineteenth century Scottish missionaries founded Livingstonia on the escarpment high above Lake Malawi, and the mission became a leading centre of education and healthcare in the north, with its historic church and buildings still standing today.
The district also includes much of the Nyika Plateau, a vast highland of grasslands and wildlife. Today Rumphi covers 4,769 km² and has around 128,000 inhabitants. Do you have stories, photos or family memories from Rumphi? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
