Nkhata Bay District – Tonga and Tumbuka heritage on Lake Malawi

Nkhata Bay was originally inhabited by the Tumbuka people in the early sixteenth century and was part of the Nkhamanga kingdom. As the kingdom declined, wars and the search for food and water led groups to move and settle in different places; from this history emerged the Tonga and Tumbuka communities who live here today, speaking Chitumbuka and Chitonga. Over time their cultures developed their own distinct features.

The district stretches from the shores of Lake Malawi in the east to the Viphya Mountains in the west. Today it has around 165,000 inhabitants and is known for its lakeside town and fishing traditions. Do you have stories or photos from Nkhata Bay? Share them with our community!
