Likoma District – Mission islands in the middle of Lake Malawi

Likoma District consists of two islands, Likoma and Chizumulu, lying in Lake Malawi within Mozambican waters. In the nineteenth century Anglican missionaries settled on Likoma, and their legacy is still visible in the great St Peter's Cathedral, one of the largest churches in the region. In 1954 an agreement set the border along the middle of the lake, but the two islands remained part of Malawi.

Today Likoma is Malawi's least populous district, with around 14,500 people on just 20 km², living from fishing and small-scale farming, with sandy beaches and baobab trees shaping the landscape. Do you have stories or photos from Likoma or Chizumulu? Share them with our community!
