Mzimba District – Kathibi, Malawi's largest district and home of Mzuzu
Mzimba District, originally called Kathibi in Chitumbuka, is the largest district in Malawi. For centuries it has been home to the Tumbuka people, and in the nineteenth century Ngoni groups arrived from the south and settled here, leaving a lasting mark on the region's history, dances and traditions. The meeting of these cultures shaped the identity of northern Malawi.
Today the district covers 10,473 km² and has over one million inhabitants. Its capital is Mzimba, while its largest town, Mzuzu, serves as the administrative headquarters of the Northern Region and a centre of education and trade.
