Kasungu District – Home of Malawi's first president

Kasungu District in Malawi's Central Region is known as the home of Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the country's first president after independence in 1964. For generations the area's fertile plains have supported farming families, and the district became one of Malawi's leading tobacco-growing areas. Its landscape of rolling hills and woodland borders Zambia to the west.

The district is also home to Kasungu National Park, with its miombo woodlands and wildlife. Today it covers 7,878 km² and has around 843,000 inhabitants, most of whom live from agriculture.
