Mchinji District – Farming land at Malawi's western gateway

Mchinji District lies in the west of Malawi's Central Region, along the border with Zambia, and has long been a gateway between the two countries. For generations its people have lived from rain-fed farming, growing maize, tobacco and groundnuts on the fertile plains, and village life follows the rhythm of the rainy and dry seasons.

The town of Mchinji, the district capital, grew as a trading point on the road and railway linking Malawi with its western neighbour. Today the district covers 3,356 km² and has around 600,000 inhabitants. Do you have stories, songs or photos from Mchinji and its villages? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
