Salima District – Senga Bay and the "Lake of Stars"

Salima District lies on the western shore of Lake Malawi, a lake long known as the "Lake of Stars". For generations fishing villages have lined its beaches, and the lake has shaped everyday life, trade and traditions here. Senga Bay, near the district capital, became a favourite weekend retreat for people from Lilongwe.

Since 2008 Senga Bay has hosted the annual Lake of Stars festival, which moved here from Chintheche to be closer to the capital and brings together music and culture from Malawi and beyond. Today the district covers 2,196 km² and has around 478,000 inhabitants. Do you have stories or photos from Salima? Share them with our community!
