Mangochi District – Fort Johnston and the southern tip of Lake Malawi
Mangochi District lies at the southern end of Lake Malawi, where the lake flows into the Shire River. In colonial times the town of Mangochi was known as Fort Johnston, an important lake port and administrative centre. The district is also home to Lake Malawi National Park at Cape Maclear, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its hundreds of species of colourful cichlid fish.
The district has a long history of trade, fishing and cultural exchange along the lakeshore and borders Mozambique to the east. Today it is known for its beaches, fishing communities and hot summers. Do you have stories or photos from Mangochi? Share them with our community!
