Nsanje District – Malawi's southern tip on the Shire River

Nsanje District lies at the southern tip of Malawi, along the lower Shire River and the border with Mozambique. In colonial times the town of Nsanje was known as Port Herald, a river port through which people and goods travelled between the lake region and the coast. The river and its fertile floodplains have shaped farming and fishing life here for generations.

Besides Nsanje, the district includes the towns of Bangula, Marka, Tengani and Fatima; Marka is the southernmost town in the country. Today the district covers 1,942 km² and has around 195,000 inhabitants. Do you have stories or photos from Nsanje? Share them with our community!
