Mwanza District – Border town and Malawi's citrus country
Mwanza District in southern Malawi lies on the border with Mozambique, and its capital, Mwanza, grew as a border town whose economy is based largely on transport and trade. For many years the district was known for its citrus fruits – tangerines, lemons and grapefruits – as it is one of the few areas in the country with a climate suited to them. In recent decades production has declined despite the efforts of local growers.
In 2003 the former Mwanza District was divided into two districts, Neno and Mwanza, under the decentralisation programme. Today Mwanza has around 138,000 inhabitants. Do you have stories or photos from Mwanza? Share them with our community!
