Neno District – A young district created in 2003
Neno District in southern Malawi was created in 2003, when the former Mwanza District was divided into two districts, Neno and Mwanza, under the country's decentralisation programme. The area's hills, rivers and farmland have supported rural communities for generations, and village life is shaped by agriculture, family ties and local traditions of song and dance.
As a young district, Neno has built its own administration, schools and health services around its capital, Neno. In 2018 it had around 138,000 inhabitants, most of them living in villages. Do you have stories, photos or memories from Neno and its surrounding villages? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
