Zomba District – Home of the former colonial and national capital

Zomba District is named after the town of Zomba, which served as the capital of colonial Nyasaland and then of independent Malawi until 1975, when the capital moved to Lilongwe. At the foot of the Zomba Plateau, the town still bears witness to this past with its historic government buildings, churches and tree-lined streets. The plateau above, with its forests, streams and viewpoints, has long been a place of retreat.

Today the district covers 2,363 km², about three percent of Malawi's land area, and borders Mozambique to the east. Zomba is also known as a university town. Do you have stories or photos from Zomba? Share them with our community!
