Mulanje District – Tea gardens at the foot of Mount Mulanje
Mulanje District is dominated by Mount Mulanje, one of the highest peaks in southern Africa, whose granite massif rises steeply from the surrounding plains. The mountain has long been surrounded by legends and is regarded with great respect by local communities. In the late nineteenth century tea was first planted in the area, and Mulanje grew into the heart of Malawi's tea industry, with green estates covering its slopes.
Today the district covers 2,056 km² and has around 428,000 inhabitants, many of whom work on farms and tea estates. Do you have stories, legends or photos from Mulanje? We warmly invite you to share them with our community!
