Castries District – home of Saint Lucia's capital city

Castries District is home to the city of Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia, set around one of the finest natural harbours in the Caribbean. The town takes its name from the French colonial period, when it was named after the Marquis de Castries, and its sheltered harbour made it a prized port in the long rivalry between France and Britain for control of the island.

Over the centuries, Castries grew from a colonial port into the political, commercial and cultural heart of the nation, with a lively market, cathedral and waterfront. According to the 2012 census, the district had more than 80,000 residents, a number that has grown steadily. Do you have a Castries story or family memory? Share it with the community!
