Choiseul District – from Anse Citron to a parish in 1765
Choiseul District was originally known as Anse Citron, and an independent parish was established here in 1765. A census in 1769 recorded 75 white settlers, 25 free people of colour, 512 enslaved Africans and 69 estates, showing how the plantation system shaped the area. Much early activity centred on the River Dorée area, south-east of Choiseul.
An Anglican church was built at River Dorée in 1846 and the first school opened in 1848; later in the 19th century Father Pierre Prudent René built a Catholic church in Choiseul village. By the end of that century about 4,000 people lived here. Today Choiseul is known for its crafts and village life. Have a Choiseul story? Share it with the community!
