Dauphin Quarter – named for the heir to the French throne
Dauphin Quarter is a historical name from the French colonisation of Saint Lucia: the French governor named the district and its town in honour of the Dauphin, the heir to the French throne. Long before that, the Indigenous Kalinago settled here, and ruins in the area still recall their presence. A local tradition also links the future Empress Joséphine with Dauphin.
The quarter kept its own identity for centuries until it was merged with Gros Islet in 2014. Its village, still called Dauphin, lies in a quiet part of the island's northeast, where history and nature meet. Do you know a story, legend or family memory from Dauphin? Share it with the community!
