Grand Cape Mount County – Liberia's fifth county since 1856
Grand Cape Mount takes its name from the 300-foot-tall Cape Mount, which Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra reached in 1461 and which became a landmark for seafarers and settlers in the region. A settlement was established here in 1840, and after Liberia's independence in 1847 a local government was formed following a treaty with the local population in 1849.
Robertsport was founded in 1856, and in the same year Cape Mount was separated from Montserrado by a legislative act to become Liberia's fifth county. Today Grand Cape Mount, in the country's northwest, has five districts and is known for Lake Piso and its beaches. Do you have a story from Grand Cape Mount? Share it with the community!
