Gbarpolu County – forests and villages of northern Liberia

Gbarpolu County lies in the forested north of Liberia, with the town of Bopulu as its capital. For generations, the region's dense rainforests, rivers and hills have been home to farming and hunting communities, whose villages are linked by footpaths and small roads, and whose customs, music and languages have been passed down from one generation to the next.

The county covers more than 9,000 square kilometres and is divided into six districts. Farming, forest products and small-scale mining have long shaped local livelihoods, while traditional leaders and elders play an important role in community life.
