Lofa County – established in 1964 in Liberia's far north
Lofa County was established in 1964 from the former Western Province and lies in the northernmost part of Liberia, bordering Guinea and Sierra Leone. Its capital is Voinjama, and Foya is its second-largest town. The county's fertile land, forests and rivers have long made it an important farming region, sometimes called the country's breadbasket.
The years of civil conflict brought great hardship, and many people had to leave their homes as refugees; from 2004 onwards, many began to return from neighbouring countries to rebuild their lives and communities. Today Lofa has nine districts and a growing population. Do you have a story, a tradition or a family memory from Lofa? Share it with the community!
