Nimba County – Mount Nimba and the iron-ore mountains

Nimba County, in northeastern Liberia, takes its name from the Nimba Mountains, which rise along the borders with Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea. The mountains are known for their rich biodiversity and for their iron ore, which made the county a centre of mining in the 20th century, with a railway carrying the ore to the coast.

The county's capital is Sanniquellie, while Ganta is its most populous city and an important trading hub. Covering a large area, Nimba is home to many communities whose farming, markets and traditions shape everyday life. It is one of the most populous counties outside the capital region.
