Grand Gedeh County – created in 1964 under the Unification Policy

Grand Gedeh County was established in 1964, during the presidency of William Tubman, when the Liberian government reorganised its interior provinces into new counties as part of the Unification Policy. This reform aimed to bring the peoples of the interior and the coast closer together within one national administration.

The county lies in southeastern Liberia, bordered by Nimba and Sinoe counties and by Côte d'Ivoire. Its capital is Zwedru, and forests, rivers and farming villages characterise much of its landscape. As of the 2022 census, Grand Gedeh had a population of more than 216,000 people in eight administrative districts. Do you have a story or family memory from Grand Gedeh? Share it with the community!
