Bong County – created in 1964, Gbarnga named after an old farm
Bong County was created in 1964, together with Nimba, Lofa and Grand Gedeh, when Liberia's administrative divisions were increased to thirteen. Its capital, Gbarnga, is named after an old farm that once stood at the site, and it has grown into an important town in the north-central part of the country.
The county's farmland and forests have long supported the communities who live here, and markets in Gbarnga and other towns bring people together from the surrounding villages. Like much of Liberia, Bong went through difficult years in the late 20th century before rebuilding. Today it has twelve districts.
