Bomi County – settlers from the Caribbean and a county since 1984

The history of the region around Bomi is linked to the settlement of Liberia in the 19th century. Between 1822 and 1847, some 3,198 free people of colour from the United States and the Lesser Antilles came to Liberia. The first Caribbean settlers came from Barbados, followed by groups from Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Grenada and finally Saint Lucia.

These newcomers settled alongside the region's indigenous peoples, and their meeting shaped local culture. Bomi County itself was established in 1984, with Tubmanburg as its capital. Today it is a county of farms, small towns and hills in northwestern Liberia. Do you have a Bomi County story? Share it with the community!
