Margibi County – Marshall and Gibi united in 1985

Margibi County is one of Liberia's newer counties. It was created by a decree of the Interim National Assembly on 13 December 1985, merging the territories of Marshall and Gibi – which is also where its name comes from. The capital is Kakata, a town that grew as a crossroads between the coast and the interior.

The region has traditionally been home to the Bassa people, as well as the Kpelle, who also have historic homelands here. The years of civil conflict caused great displacement, and many families had to rebuild their lives afterwards. Today Margibi is known for its plantations and communities.
