Grand Bassa County – Buchanan, the iron-ore port

Grand Bassa County, in west-central Liberia, is home to the port city of Buchanan, its capital. In the 20th century the port was built by the mining company LAMCO to export iron ore brought by railway from Nimba, and Buchanan grew into a busy industrial town.

During the civil conflict the port, railway and township suffered heavy damage, and for years the once bustling port was quiet. After 2005, reconstruction began and brought new hope for employment. The county is also the traditional homeland of the Bassa people, whose culture and language give it its name. Today Grand Bassa has eight districts. Do you have a Grand Bassa story or family memory?
