Grand Kru County – Sasstown and Kru Coast united in 1984

Grand Kru County was organised in 1984 by merging the territories of Sasstown and Kru Coast. Kru Coast had previously been part of Maryland County, while Sasstown belonged to Sinoe County. The county's capital is Barclayville.

The county's name honours the Kru people, famous along the West African coast for their seafaring skills; for generations, Kru men worked as sailors and boatmen on ships travelling along the coast. Fishing and farming remain central to local life. At the 1984 census, the county had around 63,000 residents, and later estimates put the figure at about 71,000.
