Mokhotlong District – 'place of the bald ibis' and source of the Senqu

Mokhotlong, whose name means 'the place of the bald ibis' in Sesotho, is a district of Lesotho's high mountains. It includes the highest terrain of the Maloti range and the source of the Senqu River, the country's primary watershed, which flows on as the Orange River across southern Africa.

For generations, herders have grazed their cattle and sheep on the mountain pastures, living in villages that were long reachable only on horseback or on foot, including over the famous Sani Pass to the east. The town of Mokhotlong is the district's capital and only town. Today the district remains a place of rugged beauty and strong traditions. Do you have a Mokhotlong story?
