Butha-Buthe District – early stronghold of Moshoeshoe I

Butha-Buthe is closely linked to the early history of the Basotho nation: the mountain of Butha-Buthe served as an early stronghold of Moshoeshoe I, the founder of Lesotho, before he moved to Thaba Bosiu. From here he began to gather the people who would form the Basotho kingdom.

The district lies in the north of Lesotho, bordering the Free State Province of South Africa, Mokhotlong District and Leribe District. Its capital, also called Butha-Buthe, is the only town in the district, surrounded by farmland and mountain villages where traditions of herding and farming continue.
