Leribe District – fertile lowlands of northern Lesotho

Leribe District, in the north of Lesotho, stretches from the fertile lowlands along the border with South Africa's Free State Province into the foothills of the mountains. These good farming lands have long supported maize, wheat and sorghum cultivation, and many families have lived and worked here for generations.

The district's capital is Hlotse, and Maputsoe is its second town, an important border crossing and centre of trade. Villages, churches and markets form the heart of community life, and traditional ceremonies and music remain an important part of local culture. Today Leribe has around 337,500 residents.
