Thaba-Tseka District – the mountains of Katse

Thaba-Tseka District lies in the heart of Lesotho's mountains, bordering South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal Province to the east. The district is home to the Katse Dam, one of the landmarks of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, whose great reservoir has transformed part of the mountain landscape.

For generations, the people of Thaba-Tseka have lived as herders and farmers in remote mountain villages, travelling on horseback along steep paths and keeping close-knit community traditions. The town of Thaba-Tseka is the district's capital and only town. Today the district is known for its mountain scenery and its people's resilience.
